Thoughts for Thursday | How to Organize your Gmail Box

I finally got so sick and tired of seeing 4,867+ unread emails in my Gmail account, that I decided to do something about it.  My email account got so far out of control that I just didn't even know where to begin.  I knew that I received far too many promotional email's, but I didn't want to just get rid of some of the ones that I actually cared about.   I never made a separate email account for my blog, so everything goes to my personal email.  It was becoming out.of.control.

I did what any twenty first century kid would do and I googled how to organize my gmail box.  I found a few great tips that have changed my world and I had to share with you.

Enter | Unroll Me

Go sign up now!  It scans your entire inbox and tells you how many "junk emails or subsciptions" that you have.  As you can see below, I had over 250!! That hideous.

In this screen shot, you can see the entire list of all your subscriptions and click "unsubscribe" to get rid of them forever or the "add to rollup" button.  The Add to Rollup is great.  This is the button I used for all subscriptions that I still wanted to be able to glance at for special promotions, but didn't need a million emails from.  Once you set up your Roll-Up, you can set it up to receive one Roll-up email per day or even per week.  I like getting mine each morning to take a scan of.

This screen shot shows you what my roll up each day looks like.   They have basically taken 20-30 emails and rolled them up into one for me and now I can scroll through and take a look at the promo shots from each company.  How awesome does that look???  I can't even tell you guys how many emails this has saved me!  It really is the coolest feature.

GMAIL Labels
This post gives a really nice way of organizing your inbox with labels as well.  I haven't followed his tutorial exactly yet even though I may eventually.  Right now, I have a "Home of Malones" label that makes it easy for me to see all the comments I receive and hope to respond to in a timely fashion.

Please tell me what you do to organize your inbox???  What am I missing?  Do you have a system?

  2. Hi Annie, I get the email situation. I just recently changed email accounts due to a number of irritating anonymous comments coming through that would not stop regardless of how much spam filters I put on. Then I decided to unsubscribe to what seem like hundreds of junk mail and even some blogs that I was getting on multiple sites. So now I feel so much freedom from when I open it from a day of not checking regularly.

  3. I'm off to work, but i'll have to check out the post you linked. I just recently opened a gmail acct for the blog but also find it insane how many emails just pile up and i never "clean" them up! Thanks for this!

  4. Oh wow, that's awesome! I get so overwhelmed with the amount of junk emails I get on a daily basis. I have been able to sort them to all go to my "promotions" tab, so I typically just do a big swipe of deleting all of them each day. Although, I always scan them to see if there are any really good deals :)

  5. This couldn't have come at a better time! My inbox currently has 9,500 unread emails (90% of them are promotions!) Thanks for sharing!

  6. Unroll me is the most genius thing ever! The best piece of advice I've heard for keeping blog emails under control is to "only touch it once". So, don't open it until you have the time to actually respond - no point in wasting time reading it, just to come back and read it again and respond later!

  8. Unroll me, awesome, need to go check that out. I actually send most of my junk mail to my old hotmail account...wonder if they have anything similar...But I need to clean up my inbox too...

  9. I'm like you, my personal and blog are on the same account, so usually I either miss a personal email or I miss a blog email >_<

I do use the labels a bit, but I also separated mine using the native four inboxes they give you, inbox, social, promo, updates pretty frequently. Have to check out this unroll me, I need it ASAP

  14. Unroll me is the best! I just did it and had over 250 junk emails too. My inbox has been so much more manageable since. I have a separate blog email which is good and bad. Good because it's all in one place but bad because I don't check it as often as my personal email so I'm not the best at replying. I'm slowly working on getting organized.
