Thoughts for Thursday | A Hard Goodbye

Matt and I went to Biloxi, MS this week for one night.  Matt works over there sometimes and I decided to join him this week to visit my old co-workers and my old boss that is a very dear friend of mine.   My old boss has been fighting cancer for the last 3.5 years.  It's been a long battle, but one that she attacked with a smile each and every day.  I was hoping to be traveling to Biloxi just to get a visit in with her; but instead, it was a goodbye.  It brought me to tears to see her and to realize we were letting her go.  She passed just 3 hours after I left her on Wednesday afternoon.  It feels surreal.

Remember to always reach out.  Send that text you've been meaning to send to check up on an old friend or pick up the phone and call.  I wish so badly that I had picked up my phone to check on her over the last 4 months or made the effort to visit.  I wish I had one last good conversation with her before I had to say goodbye.  I hate having regret.  Life is short.  Hug the ones you love just a little tighter today.

Despite the sad ending to our trip, it was nice for Matt and I to escape for the night.  We were able to catch up over lunch, dinner, gambling at the casino and then a breakfast the next morning with just the two of us.  We were able to have deep and real conversations about life without being interrupted by children and it felt really good.  Sometimes you have to get away to accomplish that.

I'm sorry for the sad post today, but unfortunately cancer seems to be only an arms distance away in everyone's lives these days.  It effects so many of us in different ways and I don't want to be afraid to talk about it.

  6. I'm so sorry for the loss of your sweet friend - prayers for you and her family during this difficult time. And thank you for the reminder to always reach out. It's so true - it's easy to get caught up in the daily rush and forget to respond to that text or call that friend back, and life really is so short in the grand scheme of things. I'll work on remembering that myself :)

  22. I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. I appreciate your honesty and reminder to reach out to those you love. After reading this last week, I've sent those texts, cards and made phone calls that I've been putting off. Life is too short to not keep up with people you care about. Thanks for that reminder!
