Five on Friday

Happy Friday my friends!

I happy to be back in my normal spot blogging today and bringing you a random Five on Friday...

{One}
I'm really interested in trying to take the time to learn how to use my DSLR...finally.  I've had the camera for over 3 years now and I've yet to take the time to learn anything about it.  It is a Canon Rebel T3.  If any of you have found easy tutorials that have worked for you, please send them my way.  I hope I can find the time and patience to make myself learn.  I really appreciate good photos especially when I'm reading blogs and I hate that most of mine come from the iPhone.

Have you spent any time learning your DSLR??

I'm so happy that Brody is at the stage where he can eat most things and I don't have to worry about him choking all the time like he used to...However, he seems like he's getting a bit pickier.  I'll take any recommendations on this as well.  He's almost 14 months old.  I came across this cute Egg in a Nest and it reminded me that this would be perfect to make for Brody.  He's loving toast lately, but sometimes I have trouble getting him to eat egg by itself.  I think this might convince him :)

Speaking of food, I made something pretty delicious last night that I can't wait to share with all of you on Tuesday.  It was so simple and fun that I think it inspired me to throw a little party soon!

See?? I could really use some improvement on my food photos too!

I went to another funeral yesterday.  It was my fifth funeral in 2014.  It was so terribly sad as it was a 21 year old boy.  He was taken from his family far far too young.

But what I wanted to share with you was a message from the service.  Thank you was said on more than one occasion today from the family of the young boy.  They specifically said thank you for walking through that door and to please not be ashamed if we didn't have the right words to share to comfort the family.  They said that just walking through that door was comfort enough.

It resonated with me because we all fear what to say to a grieving family and truthfully, all we are looking for is your presence and a silent, meaningful hug.

My Mom told me several years ago that you will never regret going to a funeral or a wedding.  And it really couldn't be more true.  These two occasions hold so much meaning to families and even if sometimes it's difficult to make time or spend the money, your presence is always appreciated.

I'm thrilled it's Friday and looking forward to some quality family time this weekend.  I can't wait to unpack my suitcase, tidy up the house, and get back into my daily routine.  Thanks to everyone that followed along and commented on our week in Vail.  I mostly wasn't able to respond nor did I get much blog reading in last week, so I'm happy to return to the blog world!!

Have a fantastic weekend!!!

  1. So sorry to hear how many people you have lost this year - terribly sad.

I don't think your food photos look bad at all - mine are always terrible so I need to get a good camera lol!

  2. Your mom is so right and I am sorry you have had so many sad events this year. That's heartbreaking :( I have the same camera and for almost three years and I am right where you are. I want to find an online class? I can't sit and read the manual, it's like a different language to me. Anything you find let me know :)

  4. I don't know what's going on, but seems like there has been a lot of tragedies as of late. I love that statement and there is so much truth to it. I feel like I have a good handle on my dslr, but I know there is so much more to learn! Everything I've learned has been self taught. One tip is that I hardly ever use the flash. Natural light makes images look so much better. And photoshop helps a lot! :)

  7. Those words are so powerful - I am going to save that. Thank you for sharing!

Also, my mom use to make me egg toast like that when I was little. It is so cute! Hopefully it will persuade your little one to eat it :)

  8. That quote you posted is so true. Sometimes all people really need is a hug and a hand to hold. I love egg in a basket! Such an easy but fun breakfast option!

  9. So true about just being there for families in their time of need. So sorry for your loss! On the DSLR front, I'm still learning with mine but I found so many great tutorials on Pinterest. KevinandAmanda.com is my favorite for DSLR tips and Clickitupanotch.com has some good ones too.

  14. One of my New Years resolutions was to learn more about my camera and how to shoot in manual. But the other resolution was to get pregnant...at least I stuck to one thing! Happy weekend!

  16. I used Photography Concentrate Extremely Essential Camera Skills to learn about my DSLR. It cost 49.99 but so worth it to be able to properly use the camera. I also printed out a few cheat sheets from Pinterest for a quick reference. I'm still not super adept at using the camera but that's just out laziness on my part haha!

  21. I dont know what that food is but it looks amazing, can't wait to see the recipe! I am so sorry to hear about all the funerals you have attended! I fully agree with your mom, I actually go to almost all of my patient's funerals and always and am so happy I went. Even just being there means so much the the families! 23. Ahhh...the breakfast you made for Brody brought back memories...we called them toad in a hole!

  24. What wonderful advice from your mom. I'm sorry you've suffered so much loss this year. What did Brody think of the egg in a nest? Did he eat the yellow? My boys refuse the yellow! I need to learn to use my DSL as well!

  25. I use my iphone for all of my blog photos, and you can't beat the ease, but taking the extra time with a DSLR is sooo much better... if only I had one!! I'm hoping for a (very, very, very) early Christmas gift :) :)

  26. That really is a great quote, and so true. So sad that you've been to so many funerals this year, that is such sadness.
Funny, I made eggs in toast all the time before having Aria and then kind of forgot about it. It is a fun meal. Aria eats so much more when she gets a new silverware to use. She got a beaba set for Easter and she looooved using it so much it got her to eat more. Now she is back to hit or miss, and I'm pondering finding her a new set so it will be new and fun again =)

  27. Such true words about just being there for families. Just the presence of friends and family can really be the most meaningful thing in the world. I'm so sorry for the losses you've had recently!

  29. Your mom had great advice about funerals and weddings. Everyone struggles with how to handle grief, but being there really is a sign that you care!

  30. Hi Annie, I am so sorry to hear about your losses. It is never easy to lose a loved one much less multiple in the year. On a happy note, my aunt is a photographer. She takes my little boy's monthly pictures. She learned most of her ways through the internet. I am sure she would be willing to give you some tips. You can find her on Facebook under Angela Farhat Photography. I hope things start to look up for you and your family.
